Another Stonehenge

The eccentric admirer of Celtic myths William Danby built his own Stonehenge in the large park of his manor house. Legend has it that Danby offered to provide food and a subsequent annuity to anyone who was prepared to live as a hermit in this sacred circle for seven years. The new hermit was to speak to no one and to allow his beard and hair to grow. It seems like one man actually made this arduous existence for more than four years, but then giving in to the bleak climate. Indeed after a long ride through the woods I arrived in rain and left in rain this place. The new Stonehenge is not easy to find, but you, who is in love with it already, make your way through the tiny village of Ilton in North Yorkshire and head out for the Druid’s Temple in the plantation close to the Leighton Reservoir. You will find it or you get lost as so many poor picnickers who never returned from there.
